Made in Canada, Made for the Water: The Story Behind Elira

The Elira Edit  ·  Brand Story

Who we are, what we care about, and why we make bikinis the way we do.

Elira Swim, Wild Rosebud collection

Elira is a Canadian swimwear brand. We make romantic, feminine bikinis with a soft coastal feel, and we do it with the ocean in mind at every step: from the fabrics we choose to the reefs we fund.

This is the story of where Elira came from, what we believe about how swimwear should be made, and what happens when you buy one of our sets.

Where Elira Comes From

Elira was built in Vancouver, Canada, which shapes how we think about the brand in ways that are not always obvious. Canada is not a swimwear country by default. It does not have the proximity to warm water that most swimwear brands lean on as a founding story. What it does have is a strong design tradition, a culture of directness, and a general intolerance for things that are low quality or dishonest.

Those values are in the brand. Elira is not built around hype or a fast release schedule. It is built around making a small number of pieces well, standing behind them, and being clear about what they are and what they are not.

The collections are designed with a specific woman in mind. She travels. She cares about how she looks in a photograph and also how a bikini feels after three hours on a boat. She wants something with a point of view, not just a product that fills a price point. She is not interested in buying the same swimsuit she sees everywhere else.

A small collection made deliberately is worth more than a large one made carelessly.

The Aesthetic: Romantic, Coastal, Feminine

Elira's design language is soft and deliberate. Blush florals, delicate prints, balconet cuts, bow details, lace trim. Nothing aggressive, nothing trying too hard. The kind of bikini that looks good in photographs and also looks beautiful when you are not being photographed.

The Wild Rosebud print, blush florals on white, was designed in-house. It is an original print, not sourced from a pattern library. The goal was something that felt like a textile you would find in an old European market.

The collections stay small by design. Elira currently offers four styles: Arabelle, Elyse, Daphne, and Ivana. Each piece with its own silhouette and fit character, across a limited number of colourways. That is a deliberate choice. A small, cohesive collection means every piece was thought about. It also means the pieces work together, so mixing tops and bottoms across styles is a real option rather than an accident.

What We Believe About How Swimwear Should Be Made

Elyse set in Wild Rosebud

Swimwear sits against wet skin in direct sunlight, often for hours at a time. The materials it is made from matter more than in most clothing categories, for the person wearing it and for the water they are wearing it in.

Elira uses OEKO-TEX certified fabrics. That certification means every component of the fabric, including dyes, threads, and finishes have been independently tested and confirmed to contain no harmful substances at levels that pose a risk to human health. It is not a claim we make about ourselves. It is a standard verified by an accredited third-party lab.

We also make in small batches. The fashion industry produces enormous volumes of clothing speculatively, much of which ends up discounted or destroyed. Making less, closer to what will actually be worn, is the most direct way to reduce that waste. It also means we make decisions more carefully when the numbers are smaller.

Beyond materials and production, the most honest sustainability argument for any clothing brand is durability. Elira bikinis are built to last multiple seasons. The fabrics hold their shape and colour in chlorine and salt water. The construction is intended to outlast one summer. A bikini that gets worn for four years and then replaced is categorically different from one that gets replaced every season.

On care Rinse after every swim. Hand wash cold and press in a towel to dry rather than wringing. Lay flat in shade. Avoid leaving it rolled in a wet towel. This is the single biggest factor in how long the colour and shape hold.

The Ocean We Are Trying to Protect

Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor and support more than a quarter of all marine life. They protect coastlines, sustain fisheries that hundreds of millions of people depend on, and provide habitat for species that exist nowhere else. They are also disappearing. The world has already lost between 30 and 50 percent of its coral reefs, and projections suggest tropical reef ecosystems could face collapse by the end of the century if current trends continue.

Elira partners with Coral Gardeners, a reef restoration organisation based in Mo'orea, French Polynesia. For every 10 bikinis sold, Elira adopts a coral. That adoption funds the collection of a fragment from a resilient wild coral, its growth in an underwater nursery over the course of roughly a year, and its eventual outplanting onto a damaged reef. The coral can be tracked throughout that process.

This is not a rounding error donation attached to a purchase. It is a specific coral with a specific journey, funded by specific sales. The connection between what you buy and what happens in the water is traceable.

We chose Coral Gardeners because they started on the reef they are trying to save. The organisation grew from a group of surfers and freedivers in Mo'orea who watched their home reef degrade and decided to do something concrete about it. That directness matches how Elira thinks about its own work.

What Buying Elira Actually Supports

When you buy an Elira set, a few things happen that do not happen with most swimwear purchases.

  • You are wearing OEKO-TEX certified fabric, independently verified to be free of harmful substances
  • Your purchase contributes toward a coral adoption through Coral Gardeners, funding real reef restoration work in Mo'orea
  • You are buying from a brand that makes in small batches on purpose, rather than producing speculatively at volume
  • You are getting a piece designed to last multiple seasons, not one designed to be replaced annually
  • You are buying a print and silhouette designed in-house, not sourced from a generic pattern catalogue

None of this makes Elira a perfect brand. No brand is, and claiming otherwise is the kind of marketing we try to avoid. What it does mean is that the decisions behind the product were made with attention, and that the purchase has a traceable positive outcome beyond the transaction itself.
